St. Louis Magazine launched The 314 Podcast‘s inaugural live event on June 16 at The Sheldon’s Ballroom.
The evening kicked off with remarks from St. Louis Magazine President and CEO Matt Coen, followed by an interactive trivia competition. Mayor Cara Spencer surprised attendees by joining SLM Editor Ryan Krull on stage for a live trivia challenge, with audience participation via mobile phones.
The highlight was an intimate sit-down between podcast host and SLM executive editor Sarah Fenske and renowned St. Louis Post-Dispatch columnist Bill McClellan. Known for his captivating storytelling and regular appearances on Donnybrook, McClellan discussed his life, career, and decades of chronicling St. Louis.
During the interview, McClellan recounted stories from his celebrated columns, including a humorous account of being stranded outside while retrieving mail during a blizzard. He discussed his affection for St. Louis, particularly his fondness for Missouri Baking Company on The Hill. A touching moment came when he discussed his diagnosis with a terminal illness and his unexpected full recovery.
The conversation balanced humor and emotion, providing audiences with an intimate look at the experiences that have defined one of St. Louis’ most recognizable columnists. The event was made even more special by McClellan’s family’s presence, with his grandson accompanying him to the stage.
This milestone event celebrated The 314 Podcast while honoring the narratives, individuals, and community spirit that define St. Louis. The recorded conversation will air as an upcoming The 314 Podcast episode, allowing listeners to experience the evening’s laughter, reflections, and memorable stories.
The episode premieres July 9. Follow or subscribe to The 314 Podcast to ensure you don’t miss it!
